What is Cyclospora?
Cyclospora cayetanensis is a microscopic single-celled parasite that
grows in the intestines of humans and is spread through the oral-fecal route.
People who ingest the infectious parasite can develop a gastrointestinal
illness called “cyclosporiasis.” The illness is characterized by persistent,
watery diarrhea. The disease is not usually life-threatening, but it can last
for weeks or even months without adequate treatment.
Cyclosporiasis was first identified during the 1970s in
travelers to tropical and sub-tropical countries. It is not common in North
America. However, since the 1990s, outbreaks have become increasingly common.
They have been traced to salad from Mexico, raspberries and snow peas from
Guatemala, and mesclun lettuce and basil from Peru.
