Breath Meditation Fundamentals
Together with posture, calmness, and focus, breathe is a fundamental aspect
of every type of meditation. Being it Transcendental, Mindful, Heart, Chakra,
or Third eye meditation, we always come back to His Majesty
The Breath. As you already know, except the oxygen, through breathe a meditator
receives prana, which is invisible energy present everywhere in the space. Each
kind of breath meditation considers it valuable element for successful
meditating performance.
The other main aspect of breath meditation is the breathing rhythm.
In short time, usually no more than 5 minutes, the rhythm of breathing
causes a trans-like psychological state that is necessary for achieving
contemplation and focus on deserved goal. The breathing rhythm also helps us
when we are deconcentrated by some thought. Always re-focus your inner attention
when meditation doesn’t work well.
How to Perform a Successful Breath Meditation?
You can choose from many types of breath meditation, and most of them are
good and useful for your whole mind-body-soul system. It is recommended that
beginners should mostly practice only breath meditation while still learning to meditate.
One of main condition for a successful breath meditation is to have no
other focus in mind than breathing itself. The whole mental attention should be
directed toward inhaling and exhaling, including the pause between them.
Other aspect is to choose most appropriate breathing rhythm for you. Be
careful: don’t think it is so easy to achieve flawless, rhythmic, and deep
breathing. You should first experiment with more of them. However, it is not
recommended to have shorter than 4-2-4 rhythm.
There are some meditation techniques
that use normal breathing, but we don’t recommend them as beginners should get
used to deep breathing. And don’t forget: breathe from the abdomen, not from
lungs.
Gifts From Simple Breath Meditation
You can consider three main methods of inhaling and exhaling. The first one
is to inhale and exhale through nose, i.e. two nostrils. The second one is to
inhale with one nostril and exhale with the other one. The third way is to
inhale through the nose and exhale through the mouth. All of them have
different meaning, importance, and effects, but it is a topic for another
article.
However, usually most of breath meditation techniques requires a small
mental effort to try to imagine how oxygen and prana enter your body through
nose, throat, lungs, and then through the whole energetic system of small
channels and points, including chakras.
Breath meditation is a perfect
way to achieve deep relaxation from everyday efforts, from stress, anxiety,
depressions, insomnia, etc. It brings far more oxygen to the cells than usual
breathing, so they get healthier and resistant to all possible illness,
including cancer.
Our general well being depends on us and our awareness of what should we do
to achieve higher level of physical, mental, intellectual, and spiritual
development. Sometimes, it needs only a small effort to change our complete
existence in a dramatically positive way. Breath meditation is such kind of
small effort with great benefits: it is simple, short, pleasurable, and
relaxing practice that gives you profound benefits for your life. Breathe
